Spring 2007 Semester
ECE738 is a seminar oriented course for advanced students with strong signal processing background. Each student is expect to carefully read 10 to 15 journal papers, or book chapters. These papers will cover three major areas during this semester:
One student will be designated to present a paper in the list in class using power point slides. At the end of the presentation, The presentor will lead the discussion by presenting a list of questions that he or she deems to be worthy of further investigation.
The presentor is also responsible for writing an extended summary of the papers being read. The length of the summary is about 2 type-written pages. In this summary, it will summarize the major contribution of the current paper from a readers' perspectively. It should discuss the strengths and weakness of the paper, providing derivation details of key equations, verify correctness of examples, and summarize issurs raised during discussions in class. This summary must be submitted within one week after the presentation and will be posted in class web site together with the power point presentation.
Each student is expected to present twice during the spring 2007 semester.
These can be seen as extended homework problems that may have the scope of a short project. A report will be turned in and graded. It is expected that three to five such projects will be given through the semester.
Final examination will be given either as a take-home exam or an in-class exam.
The class project should be a research project focusing on a specific topic, with an element of innovation and intellectual contribution. Simply read a paper and implement the algorithm will not be sufficient. You must show efforts to improve the performance of the algorithm, to enhance the efficiency of its implementation, or derive new formulations of the algorithm. Theoretical works are also welcomed. If you are currently working on a research project that may be relevant to the subject area of this course, you may work on a class project that may eventually be applied to your current project. However, you can not use results derived in your current project to satisfy the requirement of this course. You need to discuss your project with the instructor individually early in the semester. Details about project report format will be posted later in the semester.
