Research Activities

I lead the research efforts in the Wisconsin Advanced Network Design, Experimentation, and Research (WANDER)laboratory. The primary research focus of this laboratory is on providing quality of service (QoS) assurances to applications in next generation cellular, wireless, and wireline networks. One of the research thrusts involves developing communication support for collaborative and distributed signal processing in ad-hoc wireless microsensor networks. In another research thrust, we are developing for reliable power and bandwidth efficient information exchange in wireless ad hoc surveillance networks. We are also investigating techniques for QoS support in emerging wireless ad hoc and cellular networks. We are also involved in a collaborative project with researchers in the signal processing and channel modeling areas developing a multi-layer integrative approach for high data rate communication in (fourth generation) mobile wireless networks. In the context of wireline networks, we have recently developed a scalable architecture for QoS differentiation in the Internet.

In addition to developing and simulating algorithms for quality of service assurances, my research work also includes prototyping the algorithms on an experimental integrated wireline-wireless network. In the past, I have also worked on the problem of real-time and non-real-time communication in distributed computing systems. I have also published extensively in the area of fault-tolerant computing on problems such as clock synchronization, checkpointing and rollback recovery, memory testing, and resource placement.

Funding for this research have come federal agencies like National Science Foundation (NSF), Defense Advanced Project Research Agency (DARPA), United States Army Research Office, and industries like Cisco, AT&T, Telcordia Technologies, Johnson Controls, Westell Technologies, and Chrysler Motors Corporation.
